Christmas is the "singing season". There are so many Christmas songs that have been written over the years...some good, some not so good. But, why? Why are there are so many songs about Christmas and why is there so much singing at this time of the year?
Looking back to the Christmas story in the Gospel of Luke reveals that this reaction is not new, nor is it restricted to humans only. Mary sang (Luke 1:46-55). Zechariah sang (Luke 1:67-79). Angels sang (Luke 2:13-14). And Simeon sang (Luke 2:28-32).
Apparently, the news of a Savior coming to rescue those who are in captivity brings about a song in the hearts of men (and angels).
Singing praises to the Lord is beneficial on many fronts. In Ephesians 5:19-20, we see three categories of beneficiaries:
- God himself
- Others
- Our own hearts
So, this Christmas, sing out! Sing of His greatness! Sing of His mighty works! Sing of His goodness! Sing of His mercy and His grace! Sing of His provision! Sing of His birth! Sing the good news of Jesus Christ!
He is a very real and very present Savior. He has come down to rescue those in captivity. He has offered deliverance to those who will follow Him to salvation.
Will you sing?
